Here is another solution that will help you restore your beautiful, smooth and young-looking skin – chemical peels. Chemical peel is an absolutely wonderful way to radically improve your looks and unlike Botox injections treatment, the results of skin chemical peels are long-lasting. In fact, the effect of medium strength peel lasts about a year and the effect of deep peel may be permanent. Well, of course you will develop new wrinkles as the time passes – nobody can stop aging process, but this will take a lot of time.

Chemical peels can be performed at three levels: light, deep and moderate. All use alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA) but the difference is the level of concentration. The solution used for light peel will not exceed 35%, but still most solutions used for this procedure are considerably stronger than over-the-counter cosmetic products that contain these acids. Light peels are great for temporarily smoothing small wrinkles and dry and rough skin. To achieve significant results you will likely need more than one treatment. The effect doesn’t last very long, but you can maintain the results by using alpha hydroxyl products that are available for home use.
Even if you are doing this procedure at light level, you should make sure that you have prepared your skin – chemical peels should not be applied on skin with facial warts, cold sores or if you have a sunburn. You absolutely shouldn’t do this procedure when you are pregnant or lactating. You should also avoid it if you have allergies to the sun or recently had a facial surgery.
Light chemical peels do not require anesthetic and do not prevent you from your usual activities. You might experience some redness and flaking, but this won’t last long and as long as you ensure proper sun protection you can go back to work and your regular activities immediately.
Medium peel uses alpha hydroxyl acids at higher concentration up to 70%. You will need to take a week off work right after the peel and might experience some discomfort, like tingling and throbbing so you will have to use a painkiller. However, medium skin chemical peels renew skin more extensively. Moreover, they stimulate new collagen production, your skin will be firmer and wrinkles will be improved substantially. The results will be visible and will last for about a year. Crow’s feet, mild to moderate wrinkles, blemishes, pigmentation spots and even precancerous lesions will be either significantly improved or removed completely. There might be some swelling right after the procedure and there is a small risk of scarring if the acids were left on skin for too long.
The duration of light and medium peels is around 30 minutes to 1 hour. It is also important to mention that unlike deep peel chemical peels at light and moderate level are suitable and very effective for African-American skin type.
Deep skin chemical peels are extremely aggressive and risks, dangers and discomfort probably outweigh the possible reward. The procedure will take about two hours, you will certainly need a painkiller, two weeks off work and maybe even 1-2 days of hospitalization. First two days you might need a liquid diet and talking will be difficult. Within 7-10 days new skin will form. It will be red in the beginning and it will take several weeks to attain normal color.

However deep chemical peels are very effective at erasing wrinkles and treating other signs of sun damage. You won’t need to repeat this treatment and the results are permanent. Over time you will still develop new wrinkles as part of normal aging process, but you’ll probably have a sufficient number of years to enjoy the results. After deep peel your skin will be much lighter than before and will be extremely sensitive to sun. You won’t be able to tan anymore. This type of peel is not suitable for African-American skin. The most common solution used for deep peels is phenol (or carbolic acid).
Light peels are inexpensive around $75. Medium peels cost around $1000 and higher. Deep peels may cost anywhere between $2000 and $4000.
