Raising One's Eyebrows
Raising the eyebrows is one of those universal eye expressions that have been used pretty much everywhere in the world since as early as ancient times. The person will raise his or her eyebrows for a split second and then drop them back. The purpose of this signal is to draw the attention of another person to the face, so that other signals can then be exchanged.
It is a long-distance "hello" signal that is used unconsciously to acknowledge another person. The person who doesn't do it on initial greeting is perceived as a potential threat or danger – almost as if they have ignored the initial eyebrow raise completely.
Send this signal to those you like or to those you want to like you. You will see that not only many of them will return the same signal with a smile, they will actually come over and begin to talk to you, making this a great ice breaker among strangers or potential love interests.
Widening One's Eyes
Widening one's eyes by intentionally raising the eyebrows, is one of submissive eye expressions and is done in order to be perceived as less aggressive.
This is commonly used by women who pluck their eyebrows to maximize the distance between their eyebrows and eyelids, which gives them a submissive infantile look. This has a powerful effect on men, because it releases hormones in their brains that makes them want to defend the females.
Lowering the eyelids while raising the brows and slightly parting the lips is a complex facial expression that was always used by women to show their sexual submissiveness.
Similarly, lowering one's brows demonstrates dominance and aggression. If men trim their eyebrows they do it from the top to make their eyes expressions more authoritative and powerful.
Lowering One's Head While Looking Up
This facial expression belongs to submissive eye expressions as well. It makes a person appear more childlike and triggers parental reactions in people. The eyes seem larger and the vulnerable neck is exposed. Women who do this know that this is an effective way to appeal to men.
Female Flirting Eye Expressions
It is actually women who usually make the first move while making men feel that they are the aggressors! Most of the time, the man won't approach until after he picks up clear signals from the female sex that communicate he is welcome to.
This is what the woman will do - when a woman wants to get a man's attention, she will meet his gaze, hold it for a few seconds then look away. This could also be accompanied by a smile, however small. This complex signal displays interest and potential submission. She may need to repeat it a couple of times until the average man will pick up on it but once she gets his attention, she quickly raises her eyebrows and drops them back again to assure him that he has indeed, got it right.
Bedroom Eyes
As it was said in Eye Reading , Dr. Eckhard Hess, also known as the father of pupillometrics, demonstrated that large pupils are more alluring than small ones. When male participants of his studies saw identical pictures of women with enlarged pupils, their responses were twice as strong.
Dr. Hess tells us that we cannot consciously control the size of our pupils, however we can manipulate it. Here is a simple trick: while talking to the person you are interested in, gaze at the most attractive features of his or her face, think loving or sexy thoughts, and your pupils will gradually enlarge.
Seducing Eyes
Some people are actually capable of seducing others into thinking about them, just by using their eye expressions. They use the "sticky eyes" technique, where their eyes stay glued on their partner, even during a period of silence. If they have to look away, they do it slowly and reluctantly.
This "seducing eyes" method gives their partners a slightly disturbing feeling, because it induces "fight or flight" chemicals that race through their veins. Generally, eye contact triggers release of a chemical called phenylethylamine. It is scientifically proven that this chemical makes a person feel in love (see The Power of Eye Contact) .
Sideways Glance
The "Sideways Glance" is one of those eye expressions that could have several meanings. If it is combined with slightly raised eyebrows or a smile, it is a common sign of interest, and usually used by women as a courtship signal.
On the other hand, if it is combined with down-turned eyebrows, or down-turned corners of the mouth, it means critical, hostile or suspicious attitude.
Increased Blinking
Normal blinking frequency is six to eight blinks per minute. However, if you are under pressure or you are lying, your blinking rate increases.
If you were talking to someone, and he or she displays increased blinking with their eyes staying closed a little longer than usual, this could mean that they are disinterested in what you are saying, or that they have gotten bored with you! The brain of the poor individual tries to wipe you from sight by keeping the eyes closed at least for a few seconds.
The Power Gaze
Looking in a triangular area that is between the person's eyes, and the area between his eyebrows (also referred to as the imaginary third eye,) changes the atmosphere to very serious and puts the pressure on the other person,(as long as you don't look lower than the eye level). This is an intimidating gaze and should never be used in friendly or romantic situations.
In addition to this, the person's eye expressions reveal what their mind is focused on. If he remembers something that he saw, his eyes will move upward. If he remembers something that he heard, his eyes will move to the side, while his neck will be tilted as if he is listening. If he is recalling an emotion, he will look down and to the right. If he is talking to himself, he will look down and to the left. However, it is pretty difficult to recognize these movements because they are displayed in clusters with other signs and could last just a fraction of a second.
