Good hair and skin are the foundation of your beauty. These days beauty isn’t hard to achieve. All you need is basic human features and the rest can be drawn. Here is one good example…
But what about hair? While it’s possible to get a quick fix by means of a good wig it’s probably not the type of solution you are looking for. That’s where essential oils come in.
Essential oils aren’t really oils the way we know them. These are basically highly concentrated plant essences and all properties of particular plant will be reflected in its essential oil. You need enormous amount of plant material to make even small quantity of pure essential oil.[wp_ad_camp_1]While fragrance oils simply mimic scents of some plants without retaining the benefits, essential oils carry all the benefits of the plant itself. Plants that are made into essential oils will typically have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. The list of essential oils is quite long, so you probably need a little help when choosing essential oils for hair.
Some of the best essential oils for hair are:
- lavender
- rosemary
- lemon
- clary sage
- Roman chamomile
And here is why…
Lavender essential oil
Lavender essential oil is great for all types of hair. What it does is nourishes and moisturizes scalp and improves hair growth by increasing blood circulation. Thanks to its antibacterial and antifungal properties it also treats any fungi or bacteria related issues.
Rosemary essential oil
Rosemary is also one of the few essential oils that work well for all hair types. Mediterranean people have used rosemary for hair care for centuries; in fact they still do. According to some sources, rosemary stimulates hair growth by dilating blood vessels and stimulating cell division, which results in faster hair growth and healthier hair.
Clary sage essential oil
Clary sage can be applied to all hair types and is an excellent dandruff treatment.
Lemon essential oil
Lemon essential oil will strengthen your hair and help prevent greasiness. It can be used for normal or oily hair.
Roman chamomile essential oil
If your hair are on dry to normal side, roman chamomile essential oil is a good choice for you. It helps treat dry and itchy scalp and is a great natural highlighter.
How to apply essential oils
You can’t apply essential oils on your hair straight out of bottle. They need a carrier oil, also known as base oil, to be applied on your hair. Base oils are typically vegetable oils with no or little aroma of its own. While the list of carrier oils is also quite long, macademia nut oil, jojoba oil and olive oil are the most popular choices.
Add no more than 10 drops of essential oil to carrier oil, mix well and apply on your scalp and hair. Another good option is to add same amount of essential oil to unscented hair conditioner.
How to buy essential oils for hair
Unfortunately many labels can be quite misleading. If label says “fragrance oil”, “nature identical oil” or “perfume oil” chances are you aren’t getting a pure product. Same goes for “aromatherapy oils” which can be mixed with harmful chemicals and have only minimal therapeutic properties.
Quality vendors who sell essential oils in small 4 oz containers choose dark-colored glass to protect the contents from sunlight. Clear glass or plastic containers should be avoided.
